Benefits of a Social Media Break

1 Corinthians 6:12 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC) 12 Everything is permissible (allowable and lawful) for me; but not all things are helpful (good for me to do, expedient and profitable when considered with other things). Everything is lawful for me, but I will not become the slave of anything or be brought under its power.

This verse is actually kind of mind blowing when I think about it long enough. The last part where it talks about not becoming a slave of anything or brought under its power. THAT GOT ME! Social media is something that I find myself under the power of sometimes. There have been literal DAYS where my life was consumed by social media. Seeing one person’s post and somehow ending up on some random celebrity’s social media?! HOW? I allowed it to take my time and mental capacity. CRAZY! That’s when I knew it was time for a social media break.

My Social Media Break

Something I decided a few times within my social media involvement over the years was to take a break from the socials. The reason I took time off from them was simply FOR MY OWN SANITY. I found that I was consumed by social media in a very unhealthy way. The cool part was that once I didn’t have social media to worry about, I was able to start thinking my own thoughts again. I know that sounds weird, but I was allowing the posts of people and their opinions to dictate my thought process.

Another cool part about chillin’ out from social media was that I was ACTUALLY connecting with the people I knew and cared about as opposed to the random lives I was watching online. I became so grateful and encouraged by the people that were around me than I had ever been before. I felt like I was able to extend that gratitude to so many people and encourage others to do the same without having to document every minute of it.

I was able to be more productive with the things that I continuously neglected. From my marriage all the way to the laundry that I had done and that sat on the couch waiting to be folded for the past week.

I have many goals that I’ve been working towards, and those were getting pushed to the back burner as well. I listened to podcasts though, and one particular podcast AS A WHOLE (Bob Goff Dream Big) pushed me to want to be productive and motivated to meet my goals that I set for myself. I knew that my time on social media was becoming an issue, and I knew it was time when Bob Goff said, “Get off this podcast and just get going on your ambition. Don’t make the list for the 100th time. It’s time to get it done!” (Good podcast.. Take a listen).

Benefits of Social Media

Yes, social media can be so beneficial if used the right way. It can be used for….

Connecting and socializing

Having family and friends out state can obviously be hard in regards to staying connected or even getting to know them. Social media is such a great resource for keeping people connected WITHOUT A DOUBT.

Running a business or blog

Obviously, I find social media useful in this aspect to promote my website and blog posts for people to see. I love that it’s also great for small businesses to grow and share with so many people at one time.

Learning and growing

I’m in a phase and stage in my life where I want to learn everything TODAY lol. I get a little overwhelmed at times because of it, but I have found that getting to know people in the area that I’m wanting to learn and grow is helpful. Whether people are just starting or are well seasoned, there are literally places to connect with those people in order to learn things you wouldn’t typically learn on your own. It’s seriously great.

Give it a Break

I really think that if we stopped using social media as a way to just “pass time”, we would be able to be less controlled by it. Instead of watching people’s lives on a screen, maybe we can invest in the lives around us as well as our own. If we kept in mind that the lives of celebrities are living lavishly and making money off of our views and consumption, we might stop wasting so much time watching their social media accounts and feeling bad about our own. Instead of allowing this addiction to run our lives, how about we put the phones down and become social within the relationships right in front of our faces!

Let’s give our minds a break. Allow the creative juices to start flowing. Be productive. Limit your time aimlessly scrolling. Spend more time outside and be more productive in the things that you’ve set out to do! This is YOUR LIFE to live RIGHT NOW! Enjoy being present.

Challenge

How do you feel about social media? Have you tried to go without it for a weekend? How could you and the ones closest to you benefit from taking a break from social media? What do you plan on changing today in regards to social media?
